Please excuse me for going off of our month long topic of Reminiscence this week, but I am too excited not to blog about an important day for Sitters Etc.  On January 31, 2010, Sitters Etc. celebrated its 8th birthday!   Many of you will not be able to completely comprehend how important this day is for Beau and me.  But please indulge me as I attempt to explain.

Once a caregiver's aging loved one no longer is able to attend funtions, church, or simply go out for a romatic dinner,  the relationship between the two becomes stagnant, sometimes even boring.  The love is there and has always been true, but seems as if it is not growing as it always has in the past.  When you cannot attain new experiences and meet other couples together, the relationship seems stale.  However, reminiscence is the perfect answer to maintaining a loving bond with your aging spouse.   You both can recall the times you spent toget

Reminiscence is defined by Encarta World English Dictionary as, "The recollection of past experiences or events in speech or writing, or the act of recalling the past".  Many times in our lives, we find ourselves remembering a fun time we experienced with another loved one.  Other memories are hard to bear and we would rather forget them.  But memories are there to stay as once our brain processes the moments, they are always locked into our memory. 

Many elderly persons rely entirely on their children, family members or other trusted individuals to help them. This dependence upon caregivers or family members makes an older person more vulnerable to abuse and financial exploitation. Legal arrangements and protective actions by family may be necessary to shield loved ones from making bad decisions or from being taken advantage of.

Gramp was an extraordinarily brave and hard-working man.  In 1925, he jumped ship in  Baltimore Harbor off a Russian freighter to which he was consigned at the age of 17.  Later, he made his way to New Jersey where he started a contracting company and raised a family.  At the age of 35, when World War II broke out, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
